Annapurna Circuit

Annapurna region is maybe Nepal’s most famous and enticing trekking destination. The Annapurna Circuit Trek is a highly praised trekking route which takes you around the entire Annapurna ridge. The 20 days Annapurna Circuit Trek starts from Besisahar and takes you on an enthralling walk to the world’s deepest gorge, Kali Gandaki. To the east of Kali Gandaki is the magnificent sight of Mt. Annapurna l rising to the height of 8091m and to the west you can see the spectacular Mt. Dhaulagiri, 8167m.

The main highlight of the trek is the adventurous climb to Thorong-La pass which is the highest pass in Nepal at the altitude of 5416m. Despite obstacles crossing the pass you will be rewarded by an amazing 360 degrees view of the surrounding mountains and villages; a breathtaking, jaw-dropping experience. After descending from the pass you’ll be able to witness magical views of the desert like Mustang valley, home to the Tibetan Buddhist Thakali people.

On the final parts of the circuit we enjoy some fabulous sunrise views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Fishtail (Machhapuchhre) from the summit of Poon Hill at 3,210m (10,531ft) before finally arriving at yet a different paradise, Pokhara, with its many relaxed restaurants and hotels along the lakeside.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek takes you through diverse geographic and cultural variations. On the way you cross both rice farms and forests with distinct floras and faunas and you cross villages inhabited by several different ethnic groups. The marvelous landscape, the rich cultural immersion and the wonderful snow peaked mountain views makes the Annapurna Circuit Trek distinct from all other treks in the world.

Itinerary

Day 1              Arrival in Kathmandu

Beyond Borders representative will receive you at the airport. You will be taken to the hotel for check in and get the rest of the day free to rest after your flight. In the evening we have a welcome dinner where your guide will give a more detailed briefing of your upcoming weeks.

Day 2               Kathmandu sightseeing

After breakfast we take a walk through the local market, through the winding, narrow alleys all the way to Kathmandu Durbar Square which is one of the most impressive world heritage sites in the valley with its old pagoda temples and palace. Afternoon is free for preparation for the trek.

Day 3                Drive to Besisahar and trek to Bulbule

After breakfast we start our journey through an amazing landscape. En route we see the countryside of Nepal. The road offers greeneries, rivers, villages, farms and mountains. However, parts of today’s roads condition are not equally fine. Along the way we stop for tea- and toilet breaks and after arriving in Besisahar we eat lunch. From Besisahar we walk for a couple of hours to reach to our teahouse in Bulbule. The trail goes undulating for 25 minute on a jeep track. After that we cross a suspension bridge over the river Marsyangdi. From the river the trail goes uphill for 30 minute crossing villages. After 30 minutes it goes slowly down for an hour to Bulbule.

Day 4

Bulbule to Jagat (1100m)                6-7 hours

After breakfast we start to walk gently by the river for an hour and then we slowly climb up to Bahundanda for lunch. After lunch we descend steep down for 20 minutes, crossing some villages. Here we are on and off a newly built road. A gentle walk, mainly on the road, will get us to Jagat.

Day 5                    Jagat to Dharapani (1,960m)               7-8 hours

Our journey today begins in a relaxed way. We enter the district Manang after crossing a suspension bridge near Tal. From here our upcoming trail continues to take us through barley-, rice- and potato fields, crossing the village of Kodo all the way to Dharapani. Dharapani is one of the biggest villages in Manang valley.

Day 6                   Dharapani to Chame (2,710m)               5-6 hours

Today we walk on steep forested ridges, crossing several landslides on our westwards route. We should not forget to look up, as we will have some of the most sensational views of Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV. A small hot spring is there to give relief for our tired bodies.

Day 7

Chame to Pisang (3,300m)             5-6 hours

A steep and narrow path through a very dense forest will bring us to an interesting curved rock rising almost 1500m from the river. It is known to locals as the “way to heaven”. As the trail goes uphill we get surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks. Here we find ourselves in the middle valley of Manang which is hanging between two giant snow peaks. Walking through these wonderful sites we reach Pisang village. In the evening time we visit Upper Pisang for short altitude walk.

Day 8                     Pisang to Manang (3,500m)              6-7 hours

Today we get some outstanding sceneries and it feels like being horizontally in front of the peaks. From today we experience a contrast in the landscape and vegetation. Here the cold and dry climate creates a much harsher environment. At a small German bakery we make a tea stop and if we get time we visit Braga monastery, one of the biggest monasteries in Manang district.

DAY 9                   Rest day in Manang

Acclimatization day in Manang. The upcoming two days will be very challenging with rapid gain in altitude. One should never be confident with the altitude and always be alert. It is not recommended to stay idle today but to do a short walk to higher altitude to get acclimatized with the height. We walk for 3 hours in total up to a glacier. We also visit at the Himalayan Rescue Association where we gain knowledge about Mountain Sickness.

Day10                 Manang to Yak Kharka (4,110m) 3-4 hours

From Manang the trail crosses a stream, climbs to the village Tenki and then continues to climb up the Marsyangdi Valley, turning northwest up the valley of Jarsang Khola. The trail follows this valley northwards, passing a few pastures and juniper trees as it steadily gains altitude. The trail passes near the small village of Ghunsa, a cluster of flat mud roofs just below the trailhead. After crossing a small river on a wooden bridge the trail passes an ancient Mani wall in a pleasant meadow and then reaches the small village of Yak Kharka. Small but gradual ascent is the best way to avoid altitude problems.

Day 11                  Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,600m) 3-4 hours

We make our way to the foot of the pass, Thorong Phedi, today. Thorong Phedi is a small busy settlement catering the needs of tired trekkers and climbers. Trekkers, like us, use this point as a base camp. Some visitors also attempt a hike to the High Camp today so that the next day will be easier for them. However although we will have a tougher day tomorrow we stop at Thorong phedi.

Day 12                Thorong Phedi to Thorong La (5416m) to Muktinath (3,800) 7-8 hours

The day when our dream comes true! We get an unforgettable experience crossing the famous high pass, Thorong La (5416m). Each moment today we have to struggle through the icy high-altitude trail but the outstanding high Himalayan scenes are so outstanding that we still are more focused on the horizon than on the trail. By sunset we reach Muktinath. Muktinath is a famous pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The area hosts a Vishnu temple and a monastery. Muktinath demonstrates the religions harmony in Nepal. A lot of domestic and international tourists come here to visit the temple, and so do we.

Day 13                   Muktinath to Jomsom (2720m) 6-7 hours

Descending from Ranipauwa village down a steep and barren hillside we tumble down towards Kagbeni where we stop for lunch. After lunch it’s a gentle walk, alternatively a short jeep ride to Jomsom.

Day 14                    Flight to Pokhara

After breakfast we catch a flight to Pokhara where we check in at the hoel and spend the day individually. If relaxing in one of the many cafés or restaurants is not your choice there are many activities to do, such as canoing, zipline and paragliding. Pokhara is also a good place to buy souvenirs or gifts for friends and family.

Day 15                    Pokhara

Today you also have a day for yourself in Pokhara. Whatever you need help with your guide is there to advise you.

Day 16                    Flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu
